The most functional Bird Song app on the market by far.

Listen to over 300 Canadian bird songs and calls for 182 native bird species!

Have you ever heard a bird singing and wondered "What kind of bird is that?". Bird Song Id is a great tool to help you learn to quickly and easily identify birds by their songs and calls. Its great fun to use too. With Bird Song Id, identification can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Bird Song Id has been created by professional published ecologists. The app does not need an internet connection, all songs and calls are downloaded when the app is purchased.

We have included an early version of Automatic Recognition in the app for you to try. We hope this feature will help you identify common bird species. However, it needs a good quality recording to work, and takes a bit of time and patience to get used to. Automatic Recognition takes place on the device, no connection to the internet or mobile network is needed.

How successful is it ? Our aim is to get the correct bird in the top three of those listed. In our testing of over 1,000 samples we found the success rate to be 85%.

Remember this is an early release of this innovative feature, so please be gentle. A demo is available on YouTube.

--------------- HELP ----------------
Automatic Recognition needs a good quality recording of the bird
-------------
Remove the case from your iPhone if you use one as this will significantly dampen the microphone
-------------
Only record when it is very quiet, apart from the bird singing of course
-------------
Be close to the bird singing, as close as you can be without disturbing it
-------------
Only record when a single bird is singing, or when a single bird is dominant
-------------
The analysis graph should have plenty of blue and green colors with few or no black peaks
-------------
Be patient, dont expect miracles, the system works but needs good clear recordings
-------------
The peaks on the graph should reach all the way to the top. Low peaks indicate poor quality and recognition is unlikely
-------------
The Audio Quality, shown at the top of the results screen, should be at least Good, and preferably Very Good or Excellent
-------------
The highest score should be above 70% to be useful. Below this and the system is telling you it is not sure what the song is
-------------
A difference between two birds of less than 10% is not that significant, so listen to the samples from both to help you further
-------------
See the samples for how the analysis graph should look (to see the samples press the sample button at the top right of the help page)
-------------
The microphone is at the bottom of an iPhone, point the bottom of the phone towards the bird
-------------
Record a single bird at a time
-------------
Capture at least two singing episodes if you can
-------------
Record for the full 30 seconds
-------------
Avoid windy conditions. Air moving over the microphone will mask the bird sounds
-------------
Make sure there is plenty of life in the battery. Your device will reduce power going to the microphone as the battery runs down
-------------
Playing songs to the app from recorded material on the internet, other apps or CDs is unlikely to work as this material is digitally processed and edited (inter phase gaps are often shortened). They sound very different to recording birds for real on an iPhone or iPad in the natural environment.

Pros and cons of Bird Song Id Canada birdsongs app for iPhone and iPad

Bird Song Id Canada birdsongs app good for

Pretty sweet app. that will use song pattern recognition to help you identify and, depending on the match %, propose a list of birds. Although some recordings are of lower quality, they are clear enough. I would have enjoyed a little bit more description for each birds (habitat, food, hibernation, etc.) and allow to search the names in French (french names are in the index). All in all, this is a very good app.
This app is amazing!! I adore it. Showed me we have birds I didnt know were here! So fun!! I love it!!
I love the ease of use and description of what birds you are hearing (and not necessarily seeing)
Helps to identify the many birds that visit our property every spring and summer! Highly recommend! I like that you can record and the app helps to identify which bird it is.
I appreciate quickly looking up a bird and finding its song/call or even identifying it by its song/call.
I really like the app and the opportunity to learn more about the songs of Canadian birds. I think this is the future of bird and wildlife guides.

Some bad moments

Sound quality is crappy, no maps, scant info, not all the birds in my region of North America. sorry I spent the money on this app when there are so many free ones that are a whole lot better.
I was looking forward to this app based on the awesome reviews. When I opened the app I automatically noticed the pixels in the formatting. The recordings are also a bit of a pain to work with. I dont feel like this app is worth the 4.99.
I have tried this ap multiple times, with minimal background noise and have been lucky enough to be close by birds calling or singing for over 30 seconds. It has not guessed the correct bird, ever. Not even once. Dont waste your money.
Lots of REALLY bad soundfiles, too few examples per bird as well (max. 1 song, 1 call, and often only either a song or a call). Poor navigation. Enlarged pictures not zoomable or at least moveable (sometimes you just see a closeup without the birds head when you enlarge the picture). No further information about the birds habitat or behaviour etc. Very, very poor song recognition. Im really sorry that I bought it.
I really wanted to like this app but am so disappointed ! I tried out the voice recognition with ablue jay in the tree above me and even though the recording registered very good it was not able to identify the song. It gave me a list of birds it could be. Maybe their database is too limited. I even tried it with an eastern screech owl again right above me. Again the same poor results. I also listened to the recorded songs that this app has for various birds and it only has one example as compared with another app which has a few(call, warning, etc) It was a waste of money buying this app.
